Fountains without water

When energy forces to break the bonds that hold water molecules together, water evaporates. Water has dried up to leave room for imagination and playfulness, and what is left over are traces of water from the dried-out river in summer, bits of a cold iceberg in Antarctica, or the salty tears on our cheeks.
Our fountains that once held water, have now relinquished it, allowing other substances to meander through their channels: wine, metal, salt, or even popcorn.

We present a group presentation where multiple artists will explore the idea of a waterless fountain. The show will consist of a series of sculptures and paintings that explore this theme. By disrupting the symbol of the fountain, we make space for something else, to explore different narratives.

In this exhibition, we use the symbolism of fountains as a way to celebrate change, collaboration, and untried systems. The show is an invitation to imagine new stories together, by presenting different fountains, with everything but water, scattered in the space.

Opening: Saturday 8 July 19:00
Open until 29 july
Fridays & Saturdays 14:00-19:00

The hiccup is a harmless malfunction, a gentle reminder that the procedures running
throughout our body are prone to error, wherein it’s usual functioning is interrupted
(it is difficult to do anything when you have hiccups other than try to get rid of them). Being trapped in a fit of hiccups brings to the surface biological temporalities within our bodies (the breath, the heartbeat, the circadian rhythm) and freezes us in a time determined by them. The same goes for when we forget something important or say something unintentionally, the infamous Freudian slip.
A spanner is thrown into the works of a machine that usually ticks along smoothly. Just as with a hiccup, a temporality emerges in the slip, a delay occurs due to our conscious intention being interrupted by another process at work (the unconscious). This delay may be short, shaving only a few seconds off from our intentions—in which case we just laugh off the slip and proceed to say the intended word—or we may ruminate upon it for the rest of our lives (e.g. spending hours and hours on the psychoanalyst’s couch wondering why it is one often says the word magnet instead of mother). In either case, the ‘error’ always gives us pause, an interruption that prompts reflection.

The human is dependent upon and made up of a complex of biological and psychological processes that are error-prone, ranging from a harmless slip of the tongue to full psychotic breakdown. Whilst this capacity for malfunction may cause suffering, it is also what marks subjectivity. The incomplete structure of language that is particular to human culture is in many ways an inefficient and leaky system. Whilst the linguistic signs we depend upon facilitate communication amongst us, they also allow for misinterpretation (for example a word may conjure up an entirely different set of connotations for me than it does for you, stirring up completely different emotions). Despite this inefficiency that makes us error-prone, it is also what enables our capacity for reflection at all; interruption and reflection can not be separated.

The threat of artificial intelligence replacing humans or turning upon us emerges from an ideology--one which has been around for much longer than ChatGPT—which makes an equivalence between efficiency, speed and thought. Whilst the idea of an ‘efficient’ society running on pure, objective communication may have some appeal (wherein what one says cannot be misunderstood and in which we never say something embarrassing accidentally) it would also be no society at all; signals would replace signs and reflex would replace reflection.

Atemporal Hiccup stays with the interruption. Through a series of interventions, the
participating artists ask the audience to do the same. To pause, reflect and look afresh at the machines running in the background of our lives to the other side; where there is a pause or a slip, where there is a delay. In doing so, Atemporal Hiccup asks us to grasp these moments not as a failure but as a site for meaning and novelty, a space in which misunderstandings may occur alongside shared projects of imagination.

SUGAR

In for a treat? SUGAR, the collaborative exhibition by Attila Buonsenso, Kyra Nijskens and Victor Crepsley, is taking De Apotheek by storm. It's a feast for the senses that'll have you questioning whether you're living in a saccharine dream or neon nightmare.
This exhibition is a delightful mix of plastic souvenirs, immortal butterflies and hypnotic rainbow-colored collages that come together to create a realm that is both sweet and unsettling.
As you wander trough the exhibition, you'll be transported to a world where nothing is quite as it seems. Abandoned flowers glitter in the light, but as you get closer, you notice that they are not quite real. They may look like they've been plucked from a candy-colored garden, but their sharp edges and artificial shine hint at something more sinister lurking just beneath the surface. These objects are remnants of a once-vibrant society that has become obsessed with the pursuit of fleeting pleasures.
And the butterflies? They are beautiful, sure, but there's something eerie about the way they seem to hover in midair. It's almost as if they're frozen in time, trapped in a moment that is both stunning and haunted. You can't help but wonder what kind of magic was used to make them immortal and what kind of price had to be paid for that kind of power.
But perhaps the most dazzling aspect of the exhibition are the hypnotic collages. You'll find yourself getting lost in their kaleidoscopic patterns and vibrant hue's. It's like being sucked into a vortex of candy-coated chaos and you can't help but feel both thrilled and terrified by the experience.
SUGAR promises a sensory overload that will satisfy even the most insatiable of appetites, leaving a bittersweet aftertaste.

Sediments of Sentiments

'Sediments of Sentiments' is coming into being through a wave of materials and ideas, that washes ashore, and solidifies, into the space of De Apotheek. Trusting hands and eyes, Aquil Copier, Barbara Rink and Esmee Seebregts, explore what paint, pigments, colour, time, materiality, immateriality and experience have in common. The result is a gesamt-installation in which the distinction between their separate works dissolves. Cut-out paper, painted canvas and panels and video projections are accumulating as sedimentary layers of earth. The exhibition can be seen as a painterly landscape through which the viewer can stroll, one that activates an experience of the senses.

TWISTER

Twisters "raison d'etre" is showing of elaborate special effects that create
the experience of being near and even in a tornado.
A tornado isn't an easy phenomenon to build a plot around, they can't be predicted more than 3 minutes in advance.
So it's partly forgivable that the artists haven't got a linear story but rather showcase a fluid piece of mess. So, when shit hits the fan do they mop it up or simply enjoy the momentum of adding a bit of confetti to it? Just when the bartender is about to answer
this silly question, one of the guests orders a twister on the rocks.
Eventually, someone will collapse and drop to the ground, but you'll have a great time experiencing it. In the end, we all get sucked into a twister and come out as a new person.

Kevin Bauer

 Counterpoint
In everyday life, each of us perceives and experiences our environment and society differently. In the repetition of our daily rituals – getting up, eating breakfast, brushing our teeth, getting to work – we may find moments of curiosity. Our eye might be caught by an architectural detail or material finish, or a particular aspect of a social phenomenon might stand out to us. These poetic discoveries create a degree of plurality to the mundane; another layer to everyday life. They allow us to define a space of our own within the constraints of a pre-existing system. They give us a counterpoint.
We exhibit our separate practices of observation and interests together in the space of De Apotheek. We see the exhibition space as a playground: we collaborate to create a group show through spatial experimentation. How do the artworks merge, relate and reflect on each other? Our shared interest is experiencing and experimenting with space through sculptures, installations and video-works. How can we perceive this curious and uncommon space with art pieces? Counterpoint presents the results of our curiosity with a combination of our pieces.

Jing He (CN) holds a Master degree from Design Academy Eindhoven (NL), a Bachelor degree from Gerrit Rietveld Academie(NL) . Jing He’s interest in culture, politics and the history behind various daily objects, leads to imaginative visual representations involving various materials and mediums.  www.he-jing.com

Juri Suzuki (JP) came to the Netherlands in 2008. She holds the Master of interior architecture of the Sandberg Instituut and BFA from Gerrit Rietveld Academie, BEng Architecture from Tokyo University of Science. Her works are mostly related to space, local, global materials, and political issues. She writes her observations of everyday life and political issues such as immigration and the Fukushima Catastrophe.  http://jurisuzuki.com

Marijn Roos Lindgreen (NL, 1993) lives and works in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Her artistic practice is driven by an interest in the human experience of architectural space. Some of the themes being explored, within this broader scope, are flexibility of spatial boundaries, relativity of mass, and the creation of fictions by means of space. Positive and negative space, inside and outside, and other poetic opposites often reoccur. Starting points for these explorations are found in the artist’s (and others’) immediate surroundings, literature and architectural prototypes. In the form of text or installation the work reflects on the function our environment, on all scales, fulfills and proposes alternatives.  http://marijnrooslindgreen.nl/

Mio Fujimaki (JP) Through the making process, Mio Fujimaki understands and connects to the world she finds herself in. Motivated by a quest for deeper or alternative understanding, she researches the manufacturing processes of ubiquitous items, everyday mundane objects and phenomena. Studying and replicating the spontaneous and temporary material manifestations of invisible powers such as stress fractures in glass, pigment separation in ink and dye discharge in textiles, Fujimaki uncovers  unsuspected and time-based patterns. Her audience is invited to share in her process of discovery and unyielding enthusiasm for the unknown. http://www.miofujimaki.com/

Sae Honda (JP) is a Japanese jeweller / artist based in Japan and the Netherlands. She graduated from Musashino Art University in Tokyo in 2010, and later studied at Gerrit Rietveld Academie from 2013 to 2016. Some of her works are included in the permanent collection of Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and Rijksmuseum Amsterdam.   https://www.saehonda.com/

Qiaochu Guo (CN) is an artist based in the Netherlands. Her works care about the Mythological clues in a modern context. By gathering diverse and fringe perspectives, she reflects on the spiritual status in the accelerating society. She has a MA from Design Academy Eindhoven. Qiaochuguo.squarespace.com

Vincent Knopper (NL) is a visual artist and he lives and works in Amsterdam. He describes himself as an arthandler, artist, carpenter, designer, furniture maker, handy-man, painter, renovator, sculptor, woodworker. Through these descriptions he aims to articulate the similar yet distinctive faces of making, use of materials, references and labour that represent the core of his practice.

With shapes borrowed from elements such as railings, bumpers, and furniture, Knopper creates sculptures that are recognizable as functional while their function is not immediately identifiable. By leaving their function open, the material of the work and its relationship to its surroundings become the subject. https://www.vincentknopper.nl/
